Edwin "Buster" Pickens: The 1959 to 1961 Sessions (2013)

Buster Pickens' lone album, for Heritage (HLP 1008), the self-titled Buster Pickens, was recorded over several sessions in 1960 and 1961 and released in 1962, subsequently reissued in 1977 on the Flyright label as Back Door Blues and now appears on CD for the first time here. Two additional songs allegedly by Pickens, (one is more likely a recording Texas Alexander) again reissued on CD for the first time, were recorded in 1959 and come from the album The Unexpurgated Folk Songs of Men collected by Mack McCormick.

Never one to show off, Grills nonetheless possesses and encyclopedic knowledge of blues guitar styles, flawlessly able to play the styles of everyone from Tampa Red to Freddie King to Robert Lockwood to Earl Hooker. The album is funded for and released by Honeybee Entertainment with all proceeds going to the Northern Louisiana Brain and Spinal Cord Injury Foundation. Some of the artists participating in the project are Percy Sledge, the Bluebirds, Buckwheat Zydeco and Omar Coleman. The newly established charity is dedicated to helping raise public awareness of brain and spinal cord injury along with funding neuroscience research in Louisiana, as the majority of people who suffer from neurological injuries receive treatment in Shreveport. Robert Nighthawk was one of the blues premier slide guitarists playing with a subtle elegance and a fluid, crystal clear style that was instantly recognizable. Nighthawk influenced a generation of artists including Muddy Waters, B.B. King, Earl Hooker and Elmore James. This CD collects 26 sides spanning from 1937 to 1952 cut for Bluebird, Decca, United/States and Aristocrat.
